2012 off to a great start!

Lyle has been busy. (She usually is!) As Club Community Quilt Coordinator for 2012 she has prepared for the first community quilting sessions for this year. At the meetings on Saturday 21st and Tuesday 24th January work will start on "Kids' Quilts" that will be donated to hospitals and welfare organisations. Members who wish to participate (and it's not compulsory) should bring along their sewing machines and some threads.

Yesterday was a "Bag Day". Marlene, Dot, Joan and Cheryl are some of the ladies who late last year nominated 17 January as the starting date for a bag project. The intention was to motivate, encourage and assist each other as they worked side-by-side on their individual bags. It was an informal arrangement that worked well last November when a number of members worked on their Christmas table runner projects over a couple of meetings. It's great having friends on hand to help interpret pattern directions, consult about colour combinations and to exchange ideas.

Angela brought this quilt for "Show and Tell" yesterday. It was made from "leftovers" from some of the 2011 community quilts that she made. The purple colour is beautiful and she experimented with a variety of quilting designs that, unfortunately, can't be appreciated in the photo. Angela has taught and encouraged a lot of members to use their regular sewing machines to machine-quilt their projects.

A Christmas Garden Party

We met at our usual club rooms in the car park and then proceeded to our venue.

It was a glorious day for a garden party. The sun was shining and there was a cool breeze atop the mountain. Some forty members enjoyed their annual Christmas party break-up.

This year we gathered in the grounds of a beautiful old Queensland heritage home and enjoyed the vistas and the well maintained magnificent garden.

It was a casual and relaxed day and members gathered around in the garden chatting and enjoying each others’ company.

We then had our Secret Santa swap.

It was a bit sad when the day had to draw to a close. It was a wonderful day and our sincere thanks go to our entertainment co-ordinators for the year, Joan B and Lyle. Thank you also to the many ladies who helped out during the day and made this day so relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you to all the members who supported this event and brought all the delectable food along for us to share.

Saturday Activities

Yesterday was a busy Saturday at our club rooms starting with the regular monthly committee meeting. We were delighted to see the return of our president, Diana, who had been absent for a little while due to a series of conflicting demands on her personal time.

Bush Connections was the welfare group chosen as the recipient of proceeds from our 2011 rafffle quilt and during the afternoon Diana (left) presented a cheque to their representative, Pam Bryce.

The winner of our raffle quilt this year was a club member, Vicky Draper, who formally and proudly accepted her new quilt yesterday.

"Show and Tell" included the quilt that Vida started at our retreat last month.

Lyle, a tireless worker for our club, showed us her recently-completed Sashiko quilt.

Quilter’s Retreat 2011

The weekend of 8 – 9 October saw a group of Toowoomba Quilters’ members, their friends, and visitors, enjoy some quality sewing time at Perseverance Dam retreat.

This is a yearly event, and is supported well by club members and subsidised by the sales table at the annual exhibition.

This weekend was enjoyed by all who attended and there was a lot of laughter, sharing, chatting and indulgence (at the goodies table!!).

The surrounds at Perseverance Dam are the quintessential Aussie bushland, and this year it was particularly greened up after recent rains.

Jennifer must truly be the master of hexagons!! This quilt is really, really big. So big in fact, it was too large to hang from our stands without lapping the floor. So we displayed it on the carpet stairs at the side of the arena.

At our quilt show we have members doing demonstrations and trader’s stalls where you can purchase all sorts of goodies.

Joining us for the first time this year was local lady, Marilyn Kirstenfeldt, from MK’s Sewable which is situated in Prescott Street, right opposite Pillow Talk.

Marilyn is the distributor for Pfaff and Singer machines and can arrange servicing on all machines. She stocks sewing and embroidery machines, overlockers, accessories, software, haberdashery, craft fabric, classes, magazine library and gift lines.

It was lovely to have Kathy Adams, from Kool Kat Quilting join us again. Kathy is an expert long arm quilter and also has some wonderful patterns (some she designs herself), fabrics (gorgeous balis), tools etc. for sale. Pop onto her website to see more

Indigo Niche ladies, Sue Howie and Colleen Shepherd, were there once again and had lots of Japanese inspiration for us. The most delectable Japanese fabrics, sashiko kits, bags and patterns, threads and notions. Also some lovely Kitty Pippen patterns and kits.

We were delighted to have the folk from Patchwork with Busy Fingers join us this year. They specialize in hand paper piecing and have everything you could possibly need for your paper piecing projects. Some wonderful patterns for sale and manning and womaning the stall was Greg (who can wield a mean needle) and Shannon. We hope you enjoyed your stay with us in Toowoomba.

Fun loving Nikki, from Nikki Tervo Designs was there to delight us with her fantastic handmade buttons. There were many to choose from and Nikki also had some other cute gift lines and notions to tempt us. She also stocks fabrics, patterns and kits. Great to catch up with you Nikki.

Art Group Display

In October last year an Art Quilt Group was formed under the umbrella of Toowoomba Quilters Club Inc. The group meets once a month on the 3rd Saturday, and shares techniques and ideas. Mini workshops are also held. It was decided that we might like to do A4 journal quilts trying out different techniques and materials and show them at the next exhibition. The theme chosen for our journal quilts and the subsequent exhibit was “Discovery”.

As many of our members were new to the textile fibre scene we went on a journey of discovery.

Opening Night

Our opening night for the Exhibition of Quilts and other Fine Arts was held on Saturday night and one of our members and quilter extraordinaire Robyn Ginn - OAM. (Order of Australia Medal) performed the official opening.

Robyn gave a delightful and entertaining talk on her life in quilting. Robyn has taught her hand applique and embroidery techniques throughout Australia and has taught in outback and rural communities.

After the opening, members and their guests and invited guests, enjoyed a delicious supper and were then able to view the quilts on display.

Thank you to all our hardworking members who made the opening night of the 2011 exhibition such an enjoyable and successful evening.

Raffle Basket

A popular raffle at the Quilt Exhibition is the raffle basket.

It is chock full of goodies and is only $1 a ticket at the show.

Spring has sprung which means it is time for our annual

Our raffle quilt this year is a stunning Dresden Plate. A queen sized bed quilt, hand appliqued, machine pieced and hand quilted by members. Tickets are only $2.00 each and proceeds to go to “The Bush Connection”.

“The Bush Connection” supports rural families who are suffering financial difficulties. Some of our rural families have been hit hard this year with the extensive flooding within our region, so we hope our funds from this quilt will help alleviate some of their distress.

Sheila K is leaving us for a couple of months to travel over to England and see her family.

She has made this bright and beautiful Australian bird quilt for her visually impaired Mum. Each bird is bordered with an Australian floral fabric.

Congratulations Sheila. The backing is oh so Aussie too. Mum will really love this one.

Also, congrats to Marleen who has finished her Sashiko quilt. It is quite spectacular. Lots of beautiful sashiko pieces.

Here is Vicky with her hand stitched hexagon quilt completed. The photo does not do this quilt justice, the colour is much stronger ‘in the flesh’ It is amazing and very neatly stitched.

These and more wonderful quilts, both traditional and contemporary, will be on display at our quilt show.

Pink

Pink Quilts……..

When we had our cuppa for cancer fundraiser in May we were asked to make up a pink block and bring it along for a lucky draw. Many people who won blocks donated them back to the club to be made up into charity quilts.

Our community quilting ladies have put together 2 quilts and did a fine job. Thank you to those members who donated blocks and thank you to the community quilting members who gave up their time to put together these quilts.

Sashiko Workshop

Some of our members have been doing a series of Sashiko workshops with Sue and Colleen of Indigo Niche. They have been busily working on their sashiko pieces the past few months and building a quilt. The final workshop will be on Tuesday 2 August where we hope to see some of the lady’s sashiko quilts finished.

We are blessed with our meeting rooms. They are very light, spacious and warm which is a plus during this chilly winter weather we have been having.

Bears and Things

We had a visit last Tuesday from this special, classy bear.

His maker is our very talented member, Ineke. Thank you for bringing him along Ineke and introducing us to your wonderful bear. Such neat stitching!!!

Diana R must have been thinking of Independence Day and did this red white and blue. Very striking.

Last Saturday we had the most glorious sunny winter’s day here in Toowoomba. Quite a few of our members made the most of it and came along to our mid winter meeting. It was lovely to see some show and tell hanging.

Margie and Sue S have been collaborating on some community quilting and have made this quilt called ‘Favourite Things’ for a young lad named Noah whose family has been affected by the earthquakes in Christchurch. We send everybody in Christchurch our best wishes.

This pretty one is for the Mental Health Unit in Alstonville, NSW. and is called ‘Peaceful Shores’.

‘Red Stars at Night’ has been made to donate to The Chronicle’s ‘Adopt a Family’ in December.

Margie is also a wonderful art quilter. She has made this small quilt as part of a challenge to use fabrics from another art quilter in her group – to set size, set topic (A Changing World). Her piece has antique, current Indian textiles,block printed fabrics and bangles/computer parts. Very interesting work, Margie.

Angela L showed us this lovely wall hanging. She had purchased some of the fabrics on her trips to Japan and has worked the sashiko on vintage indigo pieces. The octagonal quilt design is from Kitty Pippen’s “Quilting With Japanese Fabrics”. The quilting was inspired by a sashiko design in “Sashiko-Blue and White Quilt Art of Japan”.

Sew and Chat Tuesday

This past Tuesday was one of those sunny crisp winter days and our members enjoyed the warm sunny space we have at Jellicoe Street meeting rooms.
The group had a bus trip on the previous Friday to the Beenleigh Quilt Show and there was much chatter about this and what a wonderful day we had had.

Our two darling divas, Sheila (middle) and Ineke (right) entertained us in the bus on the trip down. They had games and prizes for us, as well as witty chatter to keep us amused. Maureen (left) was our tour co-ordinator and we would like to thank her for her marvellous organization. A good time was had by all.
We also visited some quilt shops along the way where we had some retail therapy. Sew Co at Mt Gravatt and Country Quilt Co. at Ipswich. Lovely shops and lovely hospitality from the owners.

Tuesday at Quilting

This past Tuesday was a regular day at quilting group. We had a good number of members come along considering the cold, drizzly, foggy, overcast weather. It was a shared lunch day for June birthdays and, as usual, the ladies excelled themselves with the food on offer.

We had ladies busy at work.

Judy D working on another of her bright and colourful crazy quilt blocks. Judy is just recovering from an ‘incident’ with her sewing arm, so she was so happy to be back and into sewing again.

Some wonderful show and tell was on display also.

Ineke brought along her extraordinary embroidered sewing bag to show us. As you can see, it won the champion ribbon at the Toowoomba Show. Deservedly so.
Each side of the bag is exquisitely embroidered. Here are some close ups.The house is a pocket.
This young lady carries a basket with a thimble inside and underneath that is a sweet little needlecase.
This beautiful tree holds a little bird nest made from a tiny straw hat and holds some weeny teeny clay eggs.

Ineke used a pattern from an Inspiration Magazine and change it up here and there. Wonderful, wonderful work, Ineke!!
We were also shown this stunning Japanese themed quilt by Trisha W.

The colours are not very true in this photo. The quilt is superb in real life. It has been professionally custom quilted and is truly beautiful.

Here are some close ups of the colourful, tiny sashiko Trisha has worked on some of the blocks.

Trisha also showed us her chook quilt. The top middle rooster is one she designed herself. It is a lovely bright cheerful quilt.

Wonderful quilts, wonderful company – a lovely way to spend a Tuesday.

TUESDAY 24TH MAY

Last Tuesday Joan R Showed us this stunning sampler quilt. Such precise stitching, Joan.

Lyn L showed us this Thimbleberries quilt she had done some time ago.

Our community quilting ladies had put this top together the previous Saturday from blocks donated on our Cuppa for Cancer “Pink” day.

Marilyn brought her machine along and started putting together a quilt from a bundle of squares she had bought last year at the Peachester quilt show. It has been nicknamed “Jaffa” for the orange and chocolate sashing strips. Looking good, Marilyn

Shy Sheila K has put together this delightful animal row by row quilt.

Oh, there is a glimpse of her!

Joye P is whipping quilts up and here is her latest. A most spectacular quilt to go on her new couch. It is made with shimmering gold fabrics which she tells us were not ‘pleasant’ to deal with.

Joan R is another of our prolific quilters and she has put these embroidered ladies together with a wonderful collection of sunny yellow reproductions. Lovely work, Joan. (The photo is not bringing out the strong colour)

Zentangle on a Saturday

We have a textile art quilt group attached to Toowoomba Quilters Club. It is only a small group at present, but a group with so much talent amongst them.
Chris D showed us the art of Zentangle on Saturday. It was so much fun and could be quite addictive if you let it!

Chris showed us a whole page of samples she had done and then showed us how to create some of them.
She has made some wonderful zentangle pieces, even a pair of shoes. Lovely work!

Terrific Tuesday

The members continue to amaze us with their quilt production.

Joye P brought along her fabulous truck quilt which she has made for her husband. Fellow member Lyn Crump quilted it and there were a few surprises in amongst the quilted shapes.
The black and white border block must have been a bit tricky to make up. It only measures about 5 inches!!

This Saturday at the club rooms we have the Toowoomba Art Quilters meeting at 10.00am. This month Chris D is showing them the art of Zentangle.
There will also be more work done on community quilts and Robyn Ginn is holding a workshop in crazy patchwork and embroidery. (This one was for members only and filled up quickly). This workshop was subsidised by a grant awarded by Toowoomba Regional Council from the Community Cultural and Arts Support fund. Robyn has agreed to do another workshop later in the year for those who were disappointed and missed out this time.

Community Quilting

Our community quilting ladies have not stopped.
They are now producing some weighted quilts especially for autistic children. These quilts have a pocket in them and weights are added into them to suit each child. The autistic child finds the weighted quilts very comforting. Here are the first two:

Our next community quilting day will be Saturday May 21.
We have our community quilting on the third Saturday of each month.

Tuesday Stitchers

Tuesdays are always busy at Toowoomba Quilters.
Our ladies are stitching away or doing a workshop and of course always chatting and catching up with their friends.

In the Pink

We had THE best day at Toowoomba Quilters club house today.

Each year around this time we hold our biggest quilting bee and have a cuppa for cancer. This is one fundraiser that we are all very passionate about. We remember those friends and family who have been taken from us by cancer, and we celebrate the lives of those who have survived. In doing so we raise funds for cancer research and have a lot of fun to boot.

This year, congratulations must go to Margie, Loretta and Sue S who did a splendid job in organizing this event. Our events co-ordinators, Lyle and Joan B put in a big effort too.

Here is Loretta in her little pink fez hat standing by the multi draw prize table. She put a lot of work into this!

This was the programme for the day.

Throughout the day, there was a multi draw raffle.

The day was themed “In the Pink” and Glenda T took out the prize for the most spectacular lady in the pink.

Members were greeted at the door by these two sweet pink ladies, Sue S and Madeline.

Love those glasses, Madeline. Madeline made a lot of cute little pink bags we she generously gave out to members. Thank you Madeline.

During the morning we had a local skin cancer doctor come and speak to us and show us a slideshow. There were some very scary statistics there, and the whole talk was a bit of a wake up call. GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED regularly by a qualified skin cancer specialist.

The walls were lined with pink quilts and pink balloons.

Lyn L was there showing off her pink bras. No, she doesn’t really wear them. Lyn made these some years ago for a display for breast cancer fundraising.

They are a lot of fun. The black and pink one on the left was picked up originally at the op shop and then Lyn decorated it. Thanks for bringing them along Lyn.

"Quilt-as-you-go"

This is a photo of Club members taken with Jan Phillips (centre front) who conducted a "Quilt-as-you-go" workshop in Toowoomba this week. It was a full-on day that required some prior preparation but we learned lots!

This was the second-last workshop in a series that was subsidised by funds made available to our club by a grant from the Toowoomba Regional Council's Community Cultural & Arts Support Fund. All members had the opportunity to participate in any of the different workshops that comprised this series, providing a range of learning experiences and encouraging the exploration of different styles and techniques.

This new knowledge has to be implemented and, hopefully, outcomes from these workshops will be evident in quilts on display at our annual exhibition to be held at the Salo Centre during Carnival of Flowers week in September. For some, it may take a little longer!

Prize Winner

Congratulations to our member, Lyn Crump from Busy Quilting, who took out first prize in the Commercially Quilted Section at the Toowoomba Show. The quilt also took out Champion Quilt of the show. Lyn purchased the pattern which is a Crabapple Hill pattern in the U.S. and the quilt is called “Over the River”. Well done, Lyn. It is difficult to see in the photo, but there is some beautiful hand embroidered sections in the quilt.

This quilt will now go to the Brisbane Exhibition’s “Quilts Across Queensland” show where they have a class for the champions of all the affiliated show societies.

This gorgeous rail fence quilt was put together from fabrics we had donated from the wonderful ladies at Indigo Niche for community quilting.

The club sets aside the third Saturday of each month for community quilting. We now have enough quilts to send out to flood affected areas and the community quilters will now work on special quilts for autistic children.

Thank you most sincerely to all those people who have generously donated materials and their time to our community quilting project.

There was a huge crowd at quilting on Tuesday. Many ladies were working on their Sashiko from the sashiko workshops. Some of the ladies were busy sorting out donations and the flood quilts. Altogether, it was a busy, busy day.

Lyle is seen here with Mary who lives in the badly affected flood area of Grantham. Mary and Lyle were sorting through some needlework bags which may make their way to the various crafts people in Mary’s area.

Some of these beautiful needlework bags and their contents were a surprise donation from the wonderful ladies at Bateman’s Bay Needlework Group. Thank you ladies from the bottom of our hearts. We know fellow needleworkers in our region who have been flooded will enjoy receiving these very much.

Art Quilt Group

Late last year a group of Toowoomba Quilters’ members got together and formed an Art Quilt Group. It began with 5 members and we now get about 12 members to a group get together.
This past Saturday the AQ group worked on a technique using lutradur and acrylic paints to create a landscape. The idea for this came from an article by Ineke Berlyn in a Stitch magazine.
All the individual quilts (A4 size) are going to be very different.

A Special Visit

Helen joined us for lunch today. Helen was a victim of the January floods and we were so pleased to have her back amongst the ranks. She is currently living in Brisbane but hopes to be able to visit us from time to time until they eventually move back to our region.

Helen was overcome with emotion when we presented her with some gifts. The club presented Helen with 2 bags stuffed with sewing goodies. Everything she needs to get her fired up to start back into sewing.

Clare from NSW very kindly donated a sewing machine. YES a sewing machine. Thank you very much Clare, and the picture below speaks a thousand words. Helen is so very appreciative.

Judy, from Michigan USA, sent some gifts to Helen via Dianne C. Thank you so much Judy. As you can tell by the photos Helen was so very excited to receive them. Judy made a needlework case with lots of little odds and ends in it especially for Helen. There were other lovely gifts included in the parcels too.

The flood quilting is still going on and some more quilts and quilt tops adorned the walls again at quilting today.

Our ladies are still working on flood quilts and we hope to start distributing some of those quilts in the coming weeks.

The weather is starting to turn cooler now, so our recipients are going to love receiving a quilt to snuggle up with.

More flood quilts

Yesterday we held our AGM and details of our new office bearers will be posted soon. It's been a busy year so far and we've also started our regular planning meetings for our 2011 exhibition.

Work continues on quilts to be donated to assist flood victims. Some readers may have donated fabrics that they can recognise in completed quilts. We are really appreciative of everyone's contributions.

Some members work on flood quilts on our meeting days and others turn up to meetings with completed quilts. The backing and labels on many of our quilts are also worthy of attention; look at this one!

It seems that many of our members are "toppers" and tend to have their quilt tops professionally quilted. Those club members who are happy to quilt tops have extended themselves and are making a wonderful effort to assist with the completion process. Here are a few more of our completed "flood quilts".

Donation of Quilts

Yesterday this HUGE box arrived and it was full of wonderful quilts. Thank you to the North of the Yarra Quilters for this very generous gesture. We will make sure that these quilts go to the needy people in our region. They will really appreciate the warmth and comfort a quilt can bring.

Here is the great pile of quilts just unpacked. Members of NOTY quilters are to be congratulated on the fine work they do in their community quilting.

Our ladies are still hard at it producing vibrant, happy quilts for our flood victims. This butterfly one will be sure to cheer someone up.

Angela has put together this beautiful bright quilt using some Kaffe Fassett scraps and other bright and cheerful prints.

Here are two more quilts where scraps have worked their magic!

Vicki has made a lovely strippy quilt. She made this one as her house was being cleaned up after the floods. Fortunately her sewing room was left unscathed. A real flood quilt!

Dianne C made these sample squares up into a colourway nine patch quilt. The squares were 4" and were found in our donation cupboard.

From Scrappy Beginnings

From time to time the club receives donations of fabric and orphan blocks from members and their friends. Thus, when the need arises, we are able to put some of them together and make them up into quilts. Many of the quilts we are going to show on the blog over the next few weeks are wholly and solely put together from what has been donated. It is truly amazing what wonderful quilts can be made from the smallest pieces of fabrics, and the whole process reminds us of how patchwork started in the first place!

Sew -a thon Saturday

Saturday saw our ladies sewing madly - making quilt tops for our friends in flood ravaged parts of Queensland. Some of our sewing friends would have lost their entire sewing room whilst others may have only been able to salvage a little.

We are also making up some kits and Lyle, Libby and Vida are pictured here putting all the items into groups and preparing the kits.

Lyle is showing the group what went into the packs. Each pack is being presented in a lovely handmade bag. Lots of sewing notions, books, magazines, embroidery threads, fabric, patterns, handtowel, etc. etc. We are hoping the kits will help in some way to bring some hope to our fellow quilters and sewers.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported this venture and especially to our wonderful members who have really come to the fore and stepped in to help and have given their time and donations of goods and money so selflessly.

Morning Tea Fund Raiser

Some of the ladies brought along their sewing machines on Tuesday and got stuck into it. We have started producing quilts and putting the sewing kits together to be passed on to our friends who have suffered because of the floods in our region.

Alas, no photos of the beautiful spread the ladies put on for morning tea. Some serious money was raised and everyone enjoyed the delightful food. Floods and Community Quilting

Our group has always set aside the third Saturday of each month for community quilting.

After the recent devastating floods in our region we have decided to put some quilts together to bring a little comfort to those families who have lost everything.
We are also doing up some sewing kits to send out to our fellow quilters who have lost sewing items in the floods. Some may have lost their whole sewing rooms - imagine!! We hope the sewing kits will give them hope to start over.

Some of our members were right onto it and have already donated quilt tops.

The group on Tuesday got together and started the organization of the whole process. We will be having a fund raising morning tea next Tuesday 25 January starting around 10.30am for members. Members will be asked to give a gold coin at the door, bring a plate to share and if they have any sewing requisites surplus to their needs, they may bring them along as a donation as well.

Then on Saturday 29 January (our designated community sewing day) we will be having a sew-a-thon and getting some more quilt tops put together. We can start at 9.00am. and sew right through til 5.00pm.

Our friends at KoolKat Quilting, Kathy and Geoff, have very kindly offered to quilt for us free of charge. Thank you so much Kathy and Geoff.

Christmas Party 2010

WE WISH ALL OUR MEMBERS AND READERS A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

At around 11.30 am Marilyn presented the President of the Toowoomba and District MS Group, Darryl Connor with a cheque. Darryl was thrilled and the money is going to go towards "Young Care". A wonderful initiative to build specific housing for young sufferers of MS, so that they may not have to go into aged care.

Do you see the weather outside? It was a strange December day with fog and mist and later in the day, full on rain. Festive spirits weren't dampened though. There was a basket full of Secret Santa parcels and another basket of colourful fat quarter bon-bons. Lyle explained to us that the fat quarter we received in the swap has to be brought back at the next Christmas function made up into something. Yikes!!

Santa, aka Sheila, was very thankful for the cooler December weather. It gets jolly hot under that suit!! Santa was kept hopping giving out the gifts.

Judy F. (on the right) made us a lovely Christmas cake finely decorated in marzipan fruit. Thank you Judy, the cake was delicious too. Cutting the cake is Diana R and looking on blissfully is our Events co-ordinator, Lyle. Lyle and her helpers did a fabulous job in making the day a fun filled one and everything running like clockwork.

Tuesdays and Announcing Christmas break up

Tuesdays continue to grow and bring interesting quilts and items for us all to look at. We now have over 130 members in our club and can get anywhere between 25-40 quilters on a Tuesday. It is exciting to see what everyone is up to. We meet every Tuesday and every 1st and 3rd Saturdays.

This Saturday 4 December is the day we are having our Christmas break up party. It is always a fun-filled day with Secret Santa, Fat quarter swap, a scrumptious lunch , fun and games etc.. Should be a great day, and hope the weather stays cool for us.

This is a stunning quilt by Lyn L and she has used Kaffe Fassett fabrics in his Jane's diamonds design. The surround on the diamonds is the most beautiful vibrant batik print. Lyn has made this for a friend - lucky friend.

Yvonne has made this bright, cheerful, funky quilt for her Neice's 21st birthday. She was tieing it on Tuesday with some gorgeous multi-coloured sashiko thread.
Five of the blocks are the big beautiful blue flower print. Nice work Yvonne.

WOW. Jan G has completed her scattered tile quilt which she started in Robyn Ginn's workshop. Sure is bright and beautiful, Jan.

Fabulous Medallion quilt put together by Denise. Denise has had this professionally quilted by Kathy Adams of Kool Kat Quilting, Toowoomba.
Here is a close up of the centre medallion. Denise has used a quirky strip in the centre piece (not showing up well in the photo). It works really well. A lovely quilt, Denise.

Here is a bit of a twist on the sashiko - black and white - by Wendy. Wendy has combined her sashiko pieces with some cute black and white blocks. Lovely.

The 2010 Toowoomba Quilters Club Inc. quilt raffle (shown above) was drawn on Saturday 6 November.

Our lucky winner with ticket No 0848 was Val Squair of Toowoomba. Congratulations Val, and we hope your quilt brings you much warmth over the years.
Val will be presented with the quilt at our next meeting on Saturday December 4th. The Multiple Sclerosis Group will also be presented with a cheque. Our Christmas luncheon will be held on that day too, so it is going to be an exciting fun day.

Winner of the big basket of quilty goodness was Leanne Wilson of Toowoomba with lucky ticket No A85.
Leanne came straight up to our meeting rooms to collect her prize. Congratulations to Leanne, and we hope you are enjoying your winnings.

2011 looks like being another busy year for Toowoomba Quilters. We have many workshops coming up including a beginners workshop with Angela Langdon. So if you have ever thought of 'taking the plunge' into the world of patchwork and quilting, do consider becoming a members and taking advantage of these wonderful workshops.

Toowoomba Quilters Win at Queensland Quilt Show

Congratulations to two very talented members of Toowoomba Quilters Club Inc. who have won prizes at the Queensland Quilt show .

Robyn Ginn took out best of show from over 600 entries, with her stunning quilt which we showed you after it was exhibited at our show. It is called "Silk Purses and Crazy Bags". This quilt shines like a jewel and it is not surprising it won best of show. The hand embroidery on the edge is spectacular. ( This quilt won viewer's choice at our show). Congratulations, Robyn.

Kathy Adams of KoolKat Quilting won First Prize - Machine System Quilter with her wonderful quilt, The Sky is Blue the Sea is Blue. Well done Kathy. We know how much work went into this quilt and it is very deserving of first prize.
(This quilt won 2nd place Viewer's Choice at our show).Kathy was also honoured in that her pattern, "Gather Ye Rosebuds" was utitlised by Audrey Foletta of Brisbane who won first place in Category 4 - First Time Entrant. This pattern was also used by another quilter who won third place in the Commercially Quilted section of Canberra Quilt Show which was held earlier this year

Quilting Retreat - Perseverance Dam 2010 - Fun Days

There is always a lot of fun and frivolity at the retreat. Laughter is always in the air.
This year we had a lucky dip swap and lucky Ena received a beautifully made casserole carrier. She found another use for it (briefly)!!

Shaaron crafted this cute little stitchery which put a smile on everyone's face.

They don't know about this shot! The mysterious three are holding up Diana's wonderful candlewick quilt she is making in the 'quilt as you go' style. She made a lot of progress on it over the duration of the weekend. The photograph of the front did not do it justice so we will put some photos up when next Diana brings it to quilting.

Is Daphne scratching her head asking "Am I Crazy??". She did well and got this top put together. Her blocks are embellished with different yarns etc. and mostly done on the machine. Looking good Daphne!

Quilting Retreat - Perseverance Dam 2010 Show and Tell

Ena Brown with her lovely Hydrangea quilt. Hope you got home safely, Ena. Ena comes from a town west of Toowoomba and some of the road was cut due to flood rain.

Linda W with her beautiful blue and white 'Duck Pond' blocks. Linda has put the blocks together so expertly with precision piecing. Look forward to seeing the finished quilt Linda.

Diane embarked on this new quilt using batiks. She changed the measurements up a bit so she didn't have a lot of fiddly cutting. It is going to look superb.

Some years ago, Lyn R-S won the 'Block of the Month' at a Saturday quilt meeting. She has put together this wonderful quilt - (love the quilting hoop still attached Lyn). She has done some grid hand quilting on it and it is looking good. Well done Lyn, there is hope for all our UFO's.

Margaret, sister of our member, Denise, was visiting from Sydney. Lovely to have you along, Margaret. She worked on a Cathedral Window project on the weekend and it is going to be wonderful when put together!

Trish has started putting together this Japanese style quilt. Her fabrics are lovely indigo's and reds. Trish is a regular participant at our retreat, and she puts her head down and gets lots done.

Yvonne did a 'happy dance' when she finished the hand quilting on this quilt on Sunday. It is all hand quilted and has taken a couple of years to get this slash and stack style quilt done. A great achievement.

Dianne C began hand quilting this scrap quilt at the retreat. She is doing echo quilting around each flower. Every piece of fabric came from her scrap box apart from the red and cream borders which she had on hand in the stash.

Lyle showed us her Autumn Leaf quilt she finished a little time back. She got her inspiration from a gardening magazine. Well done, Lyle.

Joan worked on this 20" block on the weekend. It is hand appliqued and embroidered and is going to be part of a friendship quilt for a quilting friend who is turning 70. The theme was hearts, and Joan has chosen to do heart shaped gum leaves. The blossoms will be added next. Beautiful, Joan.

Regular visitor to our retreat, Vanessa, started a quilt for her daughter in these wonderfully bright fabrics. See you next year, Vanessa, where you may be able to show us the finished product!

This beautiful pattern has been put together by Marilyn G. Lovely autumnal shades and perfect piecing.
Marilyn C worked on putting these blocks together over the weekend. She starts with a nine patch piecing and uses a special ruler to cut them 'wonky'. It is going to be a quilt with a lot of interesting secondary patterns and movement. Look forward to seeing it put together, Marilyn.

Hiding behind her latest Bali fabric creation is our long arm quilter extraordinaire, Kathy Adams of Kool Kat Quilting. She is not really shy, we just had to photograph her quilt top in a confined space! Kathy, as usual, put her head down and achieved much over the course of the weekend.

Quilting Retreat - Perseverance Dam 2010 - More Show and Tell

Lyn is a regular visitor to our retreat and is always a 'high achiever'. She put this gorgeous quilt together on the weekend. It was all cut out ready to go and she got it finished moments before show and tell.

Gabrielle is putting the finishing blocks together for this wonderful Baltimore style quilt after 15 years!~! Her daughter picked the quilt out but then changed her mind, so it has been languishing in the UFO basket until Gabrielle got the inclination to finish it.

Jill is auditioning her latest quilt blocks in lovely bright modern fabrics. She is ably assisted by her sister Pat (R) and Sue M (L). It is going to be a striking quilt, Jill.

Pat is a first time visitor to our retreat and showed us this quilt she has finished for a friend who likes all things USA.

Linda R had this slash and stack quilt all cut out and ready to go for retreat. It is done in these most beautiful flannels and is sure to be a cuddly and cosy quilt. Nice quilting too Linda.

This fantastic scrappy hearts quilt is also done by Linda R and shown here by Ann who is holding up the border Linda has pieced for this quilt. Every fabric is from Linda's stash and Linda says the stash has not been very diminished. She says her scraps must be 'sexually active' as they seem to be multiplying!!!

Oh so pretty. Quilt done by Shirley, a friend of ours who comes almost every year to retreat with Ann J. Thank you Shirley for bringing your quilt top along to show us. Good work.

Here is our one and only (but not lonely) male member who is working on the most beautiful stained glass project from "Aussie Applique". All the blocks are Australian flora and fauna. Alton was accompanied to the retreat by his wife, Diane. It was lovely to have them along for the first time, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves (children free!)

Quilting Retreat - Perseverance Dam 2010

Our cabins and main hall, surrounded by the great Aussie bush and, for a change, green, green grass.

It was a little damp when we arrived but spirits were high. Within 5 minutes of unpacking, people were busily sewing.

This is the main hall where we sewed, played and ate.

Day visitors to camp, Sue, Jan and Chriss get stuck straight into their hand work and enjoying the atmosphere.

Our tea and coffee station was well supported and the small table to the left in front of the fireplace. That is where all the cakes and slices were that people brought along to share. Yummo.

Another of our day visitors, Angela, busy fitting in some sewing time. If people were unable to come for the whole weekend, they were able to come just for the day as the camp site is not that far from Toowoomba.

One of our early 'finishers', Vida, with her sashiko bag. She purchased the pattern from our good friends at Indigo Niche. You have done a great job on this one Vida.

Megan is a regular visitor to our retreat. Although not a member she is able to come along and pay a visitor rate for the weekend. She is working on this most incredible cross stitch. A very talented young lady.

Exhibition 2010 -Quilts on Display 4

"Hearts for Hannah" - another beautiful quilt made by Robyn Ginn. All hand appliqued and hand quilted - made for Robyn's granddaughter, Hannah. The backing is a dress fabric from Hanna's great Nana Sylvia.

"Scrappy Happy" by Robyn H. Robyn used as many scraps on hand as she could for this one. She has hand embroidered herringbone stitch over all the seams. Many hours of work combined with pleasure in making this one for her daughter.

"Swirls and Spirals" by Fay Suley. You can tell who the achievers in the club are - there name keeps popping up beside quilts here on the blog. Fay did this wonderful spiral bargello in a workshop with Lyn Crump. It was achieved by sewing strips together and cutting wedges with a 10 deg ruler. Well done Fay, seeing as you inadvertently missed the class and had only instructions to go by!!!

"Tropical Dreaming" by Carol F. The design is from A Patch of Country N.Z, as seen in a Patchwork and Stitches magazine. Carol drafted the design up and used scraps for the squares.

Another beauty by Lynn Rendle-Short. Lynn has called this quilt "Spring Stars". The quilt features mostly Kaffe Fassett fabrics and the design is by queen of mystery quilts Debbie Caffrey

Judy D had great fun making this eclectic quilt, thus she has named it "Great Fun":. Judy is one crazy lady - meaning she loves to do crazy patchwork (nice bright ones) and also loves to create art blocks. She experiments with lots of 'things' in this quilt, different fabrics, found objects and objects from her childhood. She was inspired by journal quilts in magazines. So much to look at here and it makes one want to go and create!

Exhibition 2010 - Quilts on Display 3

"The Babushka Tree" by Heather R. Heather used a pattern by Chandler's Cottage to make this fine little quilt. She got our own, Kathy Adams from Kool Kat Quilting, to custom quilt it for her.

"Doesn't even Scare the Cat" by Fay Suley. Fay took this idea from Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.com. Fay won the fabrics on a bus trip and these were not colours she would normally use. She overcame her fear and made this cheery bright little quilt.

Looks like puss was not the least bit fearful!!

"Floral Fantasy" made by our machine whizz, Angela Langdon. Angela made this quilt entirely on the machine for a workshop on Invisible Machine Applique she conducted at a Rockhampton Retreat in 2009. You have got to love that superb machine quilting!

Vicky D made this small wall quilt entitled "Walled Garden" using a paper cut technique. It is a Kay Meale design and Vicky was inspired by natures colours.

"Romantic Pathway" by Denise D. Denise did this quilt in a workshop with Irene Carrig in 2006. Very pretty Denise.

"Vintage Bears" by Deborah L. The colours are much stronger in this cot quilt than the picture is showing, so apologies for the photography. It is the sweetest design by Julie Lovell of Calico Farm Designs and Deborah has worked it up beautifully.

"You are the Sunshine of my Life" by Lynn. Can you guess who Lynn made this one for? Her son, of course. He chose all the fabrics from her stash and he wanted a mainly yellow quilts. The colours in this quilt just sing - he made very good choices.

Quilt by Genell - "The Things you find in a Scrap Bag". Genell says most of the little blocks were in a scrap bag purchased from Precious Time. With matching fabric available - well, it just grew. Very pretty quilt, Genell.

"Golden Moments" by Ena Brown. Ena made this small quilt to celebrate a 50th anniversary for dear friends.

"Gollies" made by Sheila D - A Craft Cubby pattern - machine appliqued and Sheila painted the faces.

"Double Twisted Hexagon" by Lyn Crump. This quilt was inspired by antique quilt blocks. The double twisted hexagon was originally published in England in the late 1890's. Lyn used reproduction fabrics and fussy cutting to make this wall hanging.

"Flowers for Jean" was made by Linda W. A pattern by Susie Atkins. Linda machine pieced this quilt and machine embroidered this quilt for her sister in law who always likes her quilts

"Tulips for Marion" by Angela Langdon. Angela's daughter-in-law loves tulips and also the tulip fabric which Angela had bought some years ago. Angela thought the fabric was ideal for stack and whack and it looks like she was right! A stunning quilt and beautifully machine quilted by Angela herself.

This little quilt was embroidered by one of our youngest Members, Rachel. She is just 12 years old! Hand embroidered baby animals and machine quilted it is her first effort at hand embroidery. She has called the quilt "Furry Friends". Well done Rachel.

"Dragon Fires" by Glenda T. Glenda bought the pattern on eBay - A Top of the Range Design. Made for her daughter's birthday two years ago but finished in August 2010. We know what it is like Glenda! :-)

Isn't this the cutest nursery quilt? " "Isla's Quilt" by Joan Barwick. Joan designed this quilt herself and it has been made for their 2nd grandchild "Isla Minnette Frances" using applique, embroidery and the quilt has been hand quilted.

"Paddington Bear" designed and made by Dianne S. Dianne made this for her grandchild and she loved the colours. Also, Paddington Bear is a favourite of Diannes.

Exhibition 2010 - Viewers Choice Winners

Our Viewer's Choice winner, Robyn Ginn accepting her cheque from President of Toowoomba Quilters Club, Marilyn Cooper after it was announced at quilt group on Saturday 2 October.
Robyn's fabulous quilt (pictured below) is called "Silk Purses and Crazy Bags" and is fully hand worked, apart from sewing the borders on. It is certainly worthy of the adulation it received from viewers to the exhibition!

Robyn says 'The traditional fan concept adapted as crazy bags and silk purses gave a great outlet to use my favourite silks and embroidery stitches. My bag lady and her silk purse friend (shopping for buttons) made the designing fun'. See her friends? Top row, second block from the left and second block from the right.

2nd prize winner was Kathy Adams with her picture quilt " The Sky is Blue, The Sea is Blue".

Kathy was inspired to make this quilt from a family photograph depicting children playing happily in the sand. She says "I wanted the viewer to feel as though they might almost walk into and become part of the picture". Well it looks like she has achieved just that. Beautiful work Kathy.

Also drawn at the meeting on Saturday was the big and bountiful quilter's basket raffle. Pictured is the lucky winner, Leanne (and her cute son) from Toowoomba who had the lucky number - ticket A85.
Leanne is going to share with her quilting Mum, so we hope they enjoy their prize.

The major raffle - the queen sized quilt will be drawn on Saturday 6 November 2010. So good luck to all of you who purchased a ticket in this one. This raffle was very popular and we sold out of tickets!! Proceeds to go to the Toowoomba MS Group.

Exhibition 2010 - Quilts on Display

Over the coming weeks we will be showing some of the over 200 quilts and other items we had on display at our recent exhibtion. Thank you to all our members who participated in any way in bringing this exhibition together. It was one of our most successful yet and is a real credit to our club.

"Beginners Sampler Quilt" by Lyle
This quilt was inspired by the chair pictured below. Lyle had the applique centre put together and then took part in Angela Langdon's beginner's sampler quilt. She then bordered the centre with her sampler blocks and the ideas for other borders were taken from the book "Beautiful Borders and Backings and Bindings" by Jill Riber and Margaret Sindelar.

"Lady in Red" by Carol F
Carol used the window box technique and used this wonderful feature fabric to create her quilt.

"Wagga 1" by Pam G
There were a few Waggas on display this year at the exhibition. These are the quintessential Australian-style quilt, originating from around the region of Wagga Wagga, NSW. In those earlier days they were made from anything the sewer could get her/his hands on. e.g. old blankets, hessian etc.
Pam has made this one from the woollen fabric from old jackets and shirts etc.

"Candlewick Cream on Cream" by Lyle
A stunning candlewick quilt which, unfortunately, did not photograph very well. Some close-ups have been included below to give you an idea of the stunning work Lyle has done in each and every block of this quilt.
A wonderfully large quilt too.

"APQ'S 1930's 2009 Block Swap" by Lyn Crump
Lyn belongs to a Longarm internet forum and the blocks of this quilt were all made by members of this forum.
Blocks based on 1930's designs.

"Autumn Quilt - Wedding" by Cora
Because Cora's daughter loves the colours of autumn and was married in Autumn, she made her daughter and her new son in law this quilt for their wedding.

"Civil War Quilt" by Lyn Crump
When Lyn was gifted a whole bunch of reproduction fabrics and a pattern from her mother-in-law, she got to and made this delightful quilt. Pattern by Patchwork on Stonleigh.

"To Love, Honour and Cherish" by Angela Langdon
This quilt is much more stunning in real life than shown in this photograph!! Angela made this quilt for her daughter and son-in-law who chose the colours. She machine quilted the quilt herself using her domestic sewing machine, and using feathers in the border without marking and using a hooked feather method technique developed by Sally Terry.

"Sarah's Quilt" by Hazel N
Hazel did the stack and whack workshop at the club with Fay Suley earlier this year. The quilt just grew like topsy and most of the fabrics used were what Hazel already had in her stash. Very good work, Hazel!!!

Exhibition 2010 - Finale

The visitors kept coming, and the final day of our exhibition was busy right up until closing. A very successful event and a fabulous venue. We hope to be able to secure the same venue for next year - Salo Centre, Rome Street, Toowoomba. See you all in September 2011.
Here are some glimpses of what was happening throughout the week and some of the wonderful quilts and items we had on display.

Here is our industrious exhibition convenor, Angela. Angela did an admirable job in pulling the team together and getting this wonderful exhibition together. She spent her time at the exhibition showing some strip piecing techniques. String quilts are one of Angela's passions and she is also a competent machine quilter and tutor.

This is just some of what Angela achieved during the week. Visitors were very interested in this quick and easy way of putting together a quilt top.

Busy lady!!

Now for some more small items which were on display at the exhibition. Sashiko is very popular in our club at the moment and Diana R has set the ball in motion with her wonderful sashiko placements. Beautifully sewn.

A lovely basket by Pam G using strips of fabric around cotton twine. The photo doesn't show the lovely detail on the front but it is a beaut big basket, very useful for taking your sewing projects to class or club.
Our youngest member, Isaac, is just 10 years old. He has made this chenille place mat with help from his Nan, Toni (also a member). This is his first effort at sewing and he says it taught him how to sew a straight line. He did a very fine effort of it, and he is now excited to start on his next project. By the way, our oldest member is Phyllis who is 90 - and a half.

This is the most exquisite cross stitch, done by our member, Val P. "Mighty Samari" was from a Dimensions, Fox Magazine and Val made this for her son and wife. The work in this is very fine and a credit to her.

"Boonah Dreaming" by Dorothy C. Dorothy began this wall quilt in a workshop with Robyn Christofel. She has used overlays and fibres which create depth. Good work Dorothy!

Merchant Mall - A first for our Exhibition

Two delightful ladies, Sue and Colleen from Indigo Niche have joined us. This shop specializes in Japanese and Aboriginal design. We welcome them to our exhibition and also to our club and look forward to a long association.

Indigo Niche has a sumptuous range of indigos and other Japanese fabrics and the ladies have set up a wonderful display of their goods.

They also have a large range of sashiko threads and pre-printed sashiko designs, patterns and notions.

There is certainly ' Sashiko fever' amongst club members at the moment.

Exhibition 2010 - Fine Art Items

Day 5

We set a section aside at our exhibition to display members' smaller items and fine art items.

Apart from patchwork and quilting many of our members are proficient in other areas of art and craft. On display this year, we have cross stitch, embroidery, felting, knitting, lace making, machine embroidery and collage, and more. The talent in the club is amazing.

This is an amazing work by our member Dorothy C. She has used the 'confetti' method to build up this collage of her cute pet. All tiny pieces of fabric cut up and then sewn down. Well done Dorothy.

Day 4:
Showing us some foundation piecing on her little baby machine is Lyn Crump of Busy Quilting. Lyn is a member, our workshop convenor, and she also tutors workshops at our club from time to time.

She has a Bargello workshop coming up soon for our members to participate in.

Here is some precision piecing Lyn has been able to do using the foundation paper piecing.

Vicky is showing us how she puts her hexagon paper piecing together. Janet is keeping her company.

Genell is busy sewing up a Moda Jelly Roll. She loves jelly roll quilts and has done some lovely projects with them.

This is what she has been up to. It is going to be a beauty!

Even the sales table ladies, Joan and Marleen are showing their sewing skills. Marleen working on a sashiko project and Joan working on her latest applique quilt.

Exhibition 2010 - Day 3

Day 3 brought us a foggy, rainy day. It also brought loads of people through the door who otherwise would have probably gone to see the gardens. We have some lovely floral displays put together by our members to remind them we ARE the garden city after all.

The following quilts are on display and have been designed by two of our very talented members. The work on display is outstanding and visitors are amazed at the variety and the quality of the show.
