Quilt Connect Bus Trip to Brisbane

From time to time, the club organises a bus trip for the enjoyment of our members. 

On Thursday 3rd May we took a bus to the annual Queensland Quilter's 'Quilt Connect' event in Brisbane at the Mt. Gravatt Showgrounds.

The purpose of the show is to connect quilters from each of the Affiliated Groups with one another.   There are lovely displays of quilts from some of the groups and Traders are on site so as one can supplement their quilting needs (or is that wants?)

 Our group displayed a diverse selection of quilts.  Well done to their creators.

Lyn Who?

Earlier this month a busload of Toowoomba Quilters members attended the Queensland Quilters Annual Picnic that was hosted this year by Rosewood Craft and Quilters. We had an excellent day with lots of laughs and retail therapy.  It was a great venue and glorious weather which must have delighted our hosts because we had some terrible days before and after the event!

Apparently we have five members in our club called "Lyn" and someone observed that all five were on the bus excursion that day. What better excuse for a photo of five of our lovely members - all known as "Lyn" (although some were named Lynette.)

Quilts 1700-1945

Last Tuesday many of us (a total of 60) enjoyed a wonderful coach trip to Brisbane and the Queensland Art Gallery.

This exhibition is truly amazing and we were all excited and impressed to see the quilts from British museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Especially wonderful to see - possibly because most of us had some knowledge of it as part of Australia's history - was The Rajah Quilt (1841) from the National Gallery Australia in Canberra. This quilt was sewn by women on board the convict ship HMS Rajah, during their transportation to Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) in 1841.

Many of us also took advantage of the opportunity to view another interesting exhibition at the Art Gallery: A Stitch in Time, contemporary quilts made by the late leading Brisbane quilt-maker Ruth Stonely (1940-2007).

What a wonderful day excursion. Our final stop for afternoon tea was the Roma Street Parklands.

Sew and Chat Tuesday

This past Tuesday was one of those sunny crisp winter days and our members enjoyed the warm sunny space we have at Jellicoe Street meeting rooms.
The group had a bus trip on the previous Friday to the Beenleigh Quilt Show and there was much chatter about this and what a wonderful day we had had.

Our two darling divas, Sheila (middle) and Ineke (right) entertained us in the bus on the trip down.  They had games and prizes for us, as well as witty chatter to keep us amused.  Maureen (left) was our tour co-ordinator and we would like to thank her for her marvellous organization.  A good time was had by all.
We also visited some quilt shops along the way where we had some retail therapy. Sew Co at Mt Gravatt and Country Quilt Co. at Ipswich.  Lovely shops and lovely hospitality from the owners.

TUESDAY

Glenda has made this very cute sewing bag from the challenge material she got at our Christmas function last December.  Hope all the other members have put their fabric into something???

We also had some very nice show and tell.

Marilyn with her magnificent quilt which she has made from a kit.  Everyone was in love with this quilt on Tuesday.

The other stunning quilt on the wall was made by Rowena T from flannels and quilted with perle cotton.  Beautiful work, Rowena!!!

Fabric of Society - Bus Trip

25 bubbly ladies hopped on the bus yesterday and took in the exhibition, "Fabric of Society", at the Ipswich Art Gallery. Some of the quilts on display were 'saved' by quilt historian, Annette Gero and some were on loan. They are quilts from Australia's past and just have to be seen to be believed and the stories behind them are amazing. We were lucky enough to have Annette give us a talk on the collection and she very generously signed a copy of her magnificent book for the club.
We did, of course, do a shop hop as well to fill in the day. Our first stop was Rose Patchwork Cottage in Ipswich where we were offered a cuppa after our journey, and we did a little wee shop.
Then it was on to the Ipswich Art Gallery.

For lunch we stopped by Nikki Tervo's house. Nikki is famous for her beautiful ceramic buttons. (That is her mummy Judy on the right there in the blue blouse - she is a member of our club).
Nikki gave us a talk about how she got into ceramic button making and did a show and tell of her projects and patterns for sale. We did a bit more shopping.

From Nikki's we dropped in to this unbelievable shop at Salisbury in Brisbane called The Quilters and Embroiderers Store. We did a lot of shopping. If it wasn't there it hasn't been made yet!!! Wall to wall fabrics and notions.

On the way home we just had to call in to Japanese Niche at Forest Lake. Here is President, Marilyn, and member, Ruth, delighting in the treasures they purchased and Peg looking for her wallet. It is a truly lovely shop and one we must visit again soon.
