Club Activities

The club has been very busy hosting sewing days for the younger generation during the school holidays. There were some eager young sewers guided along by there Grandma or friend to learn the basics of sewing squares together.

The club has also had a challenge for members to make a wallhanging with a vase of flowers.
The wallhangings were displayed and judged by silent voting for the most creative, bright and the best vase. It was very hard to make a decision. It was also a celebration for the annual Christmas in July day. A quilt was donated to the Toowoomba Community Baptist Church to help them with their fundraising.

Christmas in July

The club rooms were a hive of activity for the annual fundraiser for a chosen charity at Christmas with the Christmas in July theme and the viewing and judging of the pin cushion challenge. There are some very creative ladies when it comes to designing.

Ena with her pincushion won 1st place.
Trish came 2nd with her replica of the soldier's hat.
Linda won 3rd prize with her pincushion.

The tables were filled with delicious food also to help celebrate the day.

Then there were quilts on display that members have been busy completing for the exhibition in September.

Christmas in July 2015

Our monthly shared luncheon yesterday had a Christmas theme that was enhanced by the display of the wall hangers completed for our 2015 Club Challenge. Earlier in the year members were invited to create a hanger, My Favourite Christmas Tree, 23" by 31", incorporating two pieces of given fabric, to be completed in time for our Christmas in July event.

Again, Ineke did a wonderful job of organising both the Challenge and the occasion. There were prizes for ten categories: the most dramatic/arty; the most realistic; the nicest handwork/embroidery; the best background; the best decorations/embellishment; the brightest; the most mixed techniques; Shirley's Choice (selected by Shirley Bourke Craft who donated the prize); Councillor's Choice (selected by Cr Geoff McDonald who also donated the prize) and Members' Choice. The other eight categories were determined by the secret votes of members at the lunch - and some of the hangers won more that one prize!

It was lots of fun, there were over forty entries and the range of creations was amazing.  All of them will be on display in a special section at our Quilt Show at the Salo Centre during Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Week in September.
These are some of the prize-winning hangers with their makers:

With just over nine weeks to go until our Quilt Show, many members will now be concentrating their efforts on completing other items for display. Our theme this year is Quilts, Flowers and Friends.  The Salo Centre is bound to be beautiful for Toowoomba Carnival Week.

News catch up!

Apologies from a slack blog author!

Lyle who does a wonderful job of coordinating the community quilting group at Toowoomba Quilters organised a day of "quilt as you go" to give all members an opportunity to learn about this technique. The blocks made on the day have been assembled into a quilt that will be given to someone in need.

She has also been liaising with Meals on Wheels (as well as other organisations) with the result that Club members are now making placemats that will eventually be distributed to some clients of Meals on Wheels. At last count seventy, of a planned total of 300, placemats had been completed.

It's only two months until our annual exhibition at the Salo Centre in Rome Street, Toowoomba. Sheila has been busy compiling an Exhibition Handbook for members to ensure that we are all aware of procedures and requirements for exhibitors. She is also developing a Facebook page for the Exhibition so you may wish to follow progress on that. (https://www.facebook.com/TQ.Exhibition)

Tablecloths in progress

We will be serving light refreshments again at the Exhibition this year and Lyn L is coordinating the making of patchwork tablecloths to adorn the tables in the refreshments area.

Our Christmas In July function was a lot of fun with a delicious luncheon, an auction, multi-draw raffle and Christmas apron parade. Our meeting rooms were decorated for the occasion and Verna's Christmas tree quilt was admired by many.

Proceeds from the day totalled $281 which will be donated to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Di has finished a quilt for her daughter's partner. The fabrics are all from her stash and scrap bag and all of the seams are embroidered in herringbone stitch.

Much has been written about the willingness of our members to share their knowledge and assist each other - and this extends to technology. These sights prompted a few laughs at recent meetings!

Christmas in July 2010

Santa made a cameo appearance at our Christmas in July on Saturday.  Here 'he' is with our lucky winner of the fabric raffle, Vida.
Sheila's teddy bears joined us in a picnic too.  They had tea and cupcakes, bananas, donuts etc.  Clever knitting Sheila!

Each table was decorated with this delightful posy.

The bring and buy table was popular and the silent auction brought forth some energetic bidding.

Funds raised from the day will go to St Vincents de Paul Christmas appeal.
