Tuesday Beginners Group

 
Here are the happy Tuesday beginners.  They are happy because they have their sampler quilt tops all finished in time for show and tell.

Moira's quilt has some delightful vintage fabrics included and is very pretty.  Lovely work.
The photo has washed the colour out a bit, so apologies for that .... but... our meeting room has just the best light and in this case was a little too strong for the photography.

Janet's quilt is striking and all so neatly done.  Something to be proud of. 



Janice has done this bright and cheery quilt with the most beautiful block selections. 





Dot produced this wonderful sampler quilt in quite traditional colours.  A stunning quilt.






This is Lyle's quilt 'in progress' and it looks like being a beauty!.  She certainly didn't need a lesson in applique and the blocks she completed in class are really complimenting the centre.  Well done Lyle.


















Here is Lola peeking around at her gorgeous quilt.  She has completed all the blocks with precision and has also used traditional colours.  Nice all round!

We are very fortunate to be able to offer new comers this wonderful beginner's course.

Beginners Quilts

The following quilts are all beginners' quilts done in this year's Saturday classes with our Toowoomba Quilters tutor, Angela Langdon.  We are very fortunate to have members of our club who are also excellent tutors.  The Saturday ladies did an outstanding job on their sampler quilts.  Congratulations.

Come along to our Exhibition in September and see a full display of our beginners' quilts and, if it spurs you on to learn, put your name down for beginner's workshops next year.   
During the year, we also conduct various workshops which may interest the more experienced quilter.

In between workshops, we have a lot of fun on our meeting days and at special events organized by club members.

The quilt top below is done by tutor, Angela Langdon, and Angela, being a wonderful domestic machine quilter, has shown how the beginners may quilt their quilts with a simple grid pattern.

Show and Tell and Raffle Winner

Lucky quilter, Heather, won our Mothers Day raffle wall hanging. Loretta presented Heather with the quilt which she had donated to the club some months ago as a UFO. Many of our quilters worked on it to bring the quilt to it's lovely finish.

 

This beautiful log cabin quilt was made by Lyn R to send to a young couple in England as a wedding quilt. They wanted grays and Lyn has done a beautiful job adding the seagulls for interest.















Joan R did this wonderful circular bargello in a workshop with one of Toowoomba Quilters' tutors, Lyn Crump.  The colours are much more vibrant than the photo shows. It's quite a large single bed quilt, beautifully executed.




















Here is Teresa proudly displaying her lovely embroidered wall hanging which has taken her a few years to complete, but worth the wait.  It is a Bareroots pattern and Teresa has done a lovely job with this one..

 
Vicki showed us this quilt which is a different design using various shaped strips of fabrics cut and rearranged.  Good work Vicki!
 
Teresa is working on this star quilt top which was put together by her sewing friends and herself.  It was meant to be a surprise but Teresa 'sprung' them working on it. It was for Teresa's recent 'significant' birthday.  We look forward to seeing it finished.

Fabric of Society - Bus Trip

25 bubbly ladies hopped on the bus yesterday and took in the exhibition, "Fabric of Society", at the Ipswich Art Gallery. Some of the quilts on display were 'saved' by quilt historian, Annette Gero and some were on loan. They are quilts from Australia's past and just have to be seen to be believed and the stories behind them are amazing. We were lucky enough to have Annette give us a talk on the collection and she very generously signed a copy of her magnificent book for the club.
We did, of course, do a shop hop as well to fill in the day. Our first stop was Rose Patchwork Cottage in Ipswich where we were offered a cuppa after our journey, and we did a little wee shop.
Then it was on to the Ipswich Art Gallery.

For lunch we stopped by Nikki Tervo's house. Nikki is famous for her beautiful ceramic buttons. (That is her mummy Judy on the right there in the blue blouse - she is a member of our club).
Nikki gave us a talk about how she got into ceramic button making and did a show and tell of her projects and patterns for sale. We did a bit more shopping.

From Nikki's we dropped in to this unbelievable shop at Salisbury in Brisbane called The Quilters and Embroiderers Store. We did a lot of shopping. If it wasn't there it hasn't been made yet!!! Wall to wall fabrics and notions.

On the way home we just had to call in to Japanese Niche at Forest Lake. Here is President, Marilyn, and member, Ruth, delighting in the treasures they purchased and Peg looking for her wallet. It is a truly lovely shop and one we must visit again soon.

Stack and Whack workshop

Fay has forwared this photo of participants at her recent Stack and Whack workshop.We are all looking forward to seeing the finished quilts!

 

Deborah's Owl Quilt

Deborah has finished this lovely quilt for her daughter who loves owls.

In this close up the owl feature fabric and owl-shaped quilting lines can be seen.  What a lucky daughter!

Workshop Progress

Congratulations to Vida who has finished (including quilting) the Stack and Whack quilt that she commenced in Fay's workshop last November.

Last month Lyn presented a workshop on circular bargello-style quilts. Joan (3 circles) and Patricia (2 circles) were delighted with their progress and brought along their works-in-progess to share with Club members.

 

 

Show and Tell Continues

Our ladies are continuing to produce some wonderful quilts through the month of February. This is Gerry's version of the twisted bargello by Chris Timmins which was published a few years ago now in Patchwork and Quilting mag.

Heather has finished her top from Robyn Ginn's workshop last year and is in the process of hand quilting it. This is a marvellous feat from Heather as she is recovering from a broken arm. She is the first to finish, so well done Heather.
Here is a close up of one of the 'tiles'. The quilt blocks are a combination of hand qpplique and embroidery and take design elements from the feature fabric.
Judy with her fabulously colourful strip pieced blocks. The remnants from her wonderful "chook quilt". We look forward to seeing what Judy makes with her strip blocks.

Show & Tell February Part 2 - Mermaids a swimming

This is such a fun and colourful quilt! Put together by Judy F. Judy is so creative.
She has put all the hexagons together by hand.

Show and Tell February Part 1

Oriental Mosaic by Marilyn C. Marilyn appliqued by hand and put the blocks together by machine and machine quilted it herself.

Show and tell at February's meeting was colourful and abundant. Members have been very busy over the summer break and the heat hasn't deterred them one bit!


Log Cabin with a Twist by Patricia R. Patricia found this one a challenge as she had never tried the paper piecing technique before and this one was complex.


Sharing Australia with Alexander by Diana R. Diana has made this for her grandchild Alexander who lives in England but loves all things Australian. This is her own design and depicts the various landscapes of Australia. Alexander will receive this soon as Diana is about to jet off to England.

Bali Stars by Marilyn C. Marilyn had this lovely collection of batiks and wanted to make a star quilt. Stunning.

Part 4 of The Largest Hexagon quilt which is being constructed for possible entry into the Guiness World Records. Many of our members have made flower hexagons for the quilt. The quilt will be completed by May.
This part is 5.5 mtrs long and contains 21,743 hexagons. Wonder who counted them? Maybe it was our member Lyn C who quilted this section. Well done everyone and good luck with the judging.

This little fellow was checking out all the colour and he was given to Lyn L at Christmas at her Doll's group break-up. He was made from instructions from here.

Stack & Whack!

Some of our members were very productive over the festive season. (Some of us just didn't managed to get anything much together!) Diana brought this finished quilt along to our last meeting. It is one of two that she started and completed in recent months for her grandchildren in England.

The blocks for this quilt were started at the "Stack and Whack" workshop held in November last year. Club members who attended managed to complete one or two blocks during the workshop. Our patient tutor, Fay, is sitting in the front on the right (holding my block.)

Everyone, especially Fay, is looking forward to seeing some more completed "Stack and Whack" quilts that were started at the workshop.
