Club Activities & Amazing Show & Tell

 

We are very fortunate to have our Activity Co-ordinator, Ineke, conducting affairs again this year.  Ineke does a spot on job.

Last Tuesday saw us going to Caboolture to join the Crazy Quilters of Caboolture who were hosting this year’s Queensland Quilter’s Picnic.

It was inclement weather, but that didn’t stop our intrepid quilters rising bright and early and boarding the bus at 6.30 a.m.  A short stop at Kilcoy for a delightful morning tea provided and organized by various members was welcomed.

On the way home we visited these lively gals at their shop called “Make It – Hobby ‘n Craft” at 70 Rostrevor Road, Boondall.  It was an Aladdin's cave full of yummy things.  The shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – 9.00 – 4.30 and Saturday mornings 9.00 –12.00.  The ladies provided us with afternoon tea in their garden at the back of the shop.  The weather had improved by this time fortunately.

The Art Quilt group meets each third Saturday of the month.

The ladies are currently working on their portraits but like any good quilter they can always be diverted by a new project or technique.

Sharon D with the beginnings of her art quilt featuring the fabulous rainbow lorikeet.  Sharon was inspired by the lorikeets who visited their bird bath when they lived at Tugun on the Gold Coast.

Lesley, one of our newer members, started this feather quilt in a workshop and she has used some very fine black bias to give the stained glass effect.

Meeting Day Tuesday, 21st May.

Now for some truly amazing show and tell.  This Dear Jane quilt top has been produced by Lyn B, who has pieced each block by hand.  We have watched Lyn work on the blocks at quilt days on Tuesday and she has also documented each and every block in her Dear Jane folder.  Congratulations, Lyn

 

Of course, Lyn intends to hand quilt this quilt.

“Tibouchina” by Angela Langdon.  Angela did this raw edge applique piece in a workshop in 2009 with Sharon Schamber of the USA.

Angela is a marvellous machine quilter and quilted this quilt this year in feathers and no marking of the quilt top!

Lyn Crump is holding a workshop on Tuesday, 30 July on this foundation pieced table runner.  Members may book with our workshop convenor, Cheryl.  Don’t miss this one.

Stitchery quilts by Linda R.  Linda is a stitchery whizz and her work on these quilts is exquisite.

A busy Tuesday

We had a busy day at our meeting rooms last Tuesday: our monthly business meeting, students attending Angela's Sampler Quilt Course and lots of members enjoying a social sew and chat.

Lyn H showed us her Noah's Ark Quilt that she made for her lucky grandson. She machine-embroidered the panels with the help of her daughter.

There will be a smaller crowd at the meeting this coming Tuesday as a bus-load of members  is heading to Caboolture for the Queensland Quilters Picnic.

Cuppa for Cancer - 2013

We hit a purple patch on Tuesday when we hosted a Cuppa for Cancer fundraiser for cancer research.  Thank you to Margie, Loretta and Sue S for organizing this special day.

These sweet ladies in the tiaras talked to our group about ovarian cancer.  It is such an insidious cancer being so hard to detect and very hard to treat.

There was a huge display of very creative purple bras made and displayed by our members.

Gadgets

We had the ‘Gadget Queen’, Pauline Rogers of Quilter’s World visit us on Tuesday 23rd April to give us tips and hints to make our patchworking lives easier.

Here is is Pauline showing us some brilliant ways to quilt as we go.  She is joined here by Lyn L, Fay S, and Joan R.  Joan is holding a patchwork jacket which Pauline transformed from a simple sweatshirt. 
The ladies were enthralled with all the ideas Pauline gave for using and getting the most out of their tools.  Afterwards there was a shopping frenzy as ladies grabbed some of the handy tools promoted by Pauline.  A very informative session and seemed to be enjoyed by all members.  Thank you to Cheryl G for co-ordinating it.

The previous Tuesday, one of our talented members, Linda Wrench, held a chenilling workshop.  This was enjoyed by all the participants and some of the ladies had finished their projects and brought them along for showing.  The club has purchased some chenille cutters for members’ use, so these came in handy.

Linda was inspired by a piece of bark she found whilst camping and made this piece with her own hand painted fabrics and some beading.  Joan had a lot of fun stitching her cushion.

Judy F won first prize at the recent Royal Agricultural show with her gorgeous doll.  The hair was done in the microwave with strips of fabric.  Judy is one very talented lady.  Congrats, Judy.












Next Tuesday, 30 April is our Cuppa for Cancer day and the theme for the day will be purple and members may decorate a purple bra and wear a purple outfit.  This is a fund raiser for medical research, so we hope to see lots of members and their friends on the day.
